The Water Boy might have been on to something. Did you know
that about 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered in water and up to 60% of the
human body is water? Crazy, huh? Anyone interested in fitness
or losing weight knows how important water is to the body. The
problem is getting all of the water in. I see a lot of people asking
about what you should log as far as fluids and alternatives to water so I
thought I'd share my tips and tricks.
I currently log all of my water in my food diary. I count
everything except things that contain caffeine. Most things don’t contain
enough caffeine to be counteractive to hydration, but I do it to be on the safe
side anyway. This includes water, teas, juices/smoothies, shakes, Icees
(I love them), broths and jello. Yes, I count jello as a liquid.
Here’s how I’m getting it all in:
· Get tricky. When I first started pushing myself to
drink more water I had a really rough time because I felt like I was constantly
filling up my little 16 oz reusable bottle. So I upgraded. I refuse
to buy reusable bottles because I end up forgetting them somewhere or someone
uses them for something besides water and forgets about it and then there's a
smell I can't get out (gross, but honest!). But then I stumbled across
Smart Water. I love Smart Water, but I honestly can’t afford it.
What I love is that the giant bottles are 32 oz each, so you only have to drink
2 to get that 8 cup minimum of legend. Obviously you can drink more if
you want, but 2 bottles a day is awesome.
Find your inner child and use a straw when you’re out to eat, or
buy squeeze bottle type tops. It just goes down faster than traditional
bottles.
· Carry it with you. Fill a bottle up in the
morning and drink it on the drive to work. Keep a bottle and a mug in
your desk. I have a coffee mug, honey, Stevia and 3-4 different kinds of
tea in my desk with 2 plastic bottles and 3 different flavors of Crystal
Light. I have no excuse not to drink water.
· Drink it EVERYWHERE. Substitute water where you would normally get soda, or
juice. Drink a glass with breakfast, order it with your lunch, or replace
your alcoholic beverage at dinner with a nice cool glass of water.
If you want to have beverages, try alternating water with your
other beverage of choice.
· Flavored Teas.
I’m not really one for black tea. But give me red, white or green and
I’ll drink it all day. I’m a huge fan of Celestial Seasonings, Stash and
all the new Lipton flavors. Delicious! I sweeten with Stevia and
drink all day. Or you could make iced tea. Place 5-6 tea bags in about 2
cups of water and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and let steep for at
least 5 minutes. While the tea is steeping add ¾ cup sugar or Splenda to
a 2 quart pitcher , and then fill halfway with cold water. Remove
tea bags with a slotted spoon. Add tea water to pitcher while
stirring. Fill pitcher the rest of the way with water . Serve over
it.
· Flavored water. I’m a fan of Crystal Light and Mio. Try them in your
water for a little kick.
· Add a lemon or a lime. Sometimes this gives the water just enough of a kick to
make it easier to drink.
· Try fruit water. These look so delicious. http://www.theyummylife.com/Flavored_Water
