My subject is “April Showers bring May Flowers, what is your best and/or worst memory of something that happened in April”.  It was submitted by Southern Belle Charm.  Here goes:

April is usually an unremarkable month for me.  We dye eggs.  Easter comes and goes.  Sometimes it rains.  I live in Wisconsin so usually it snows a few times.

As a general rule, the air smells like dog doo on account of the thawing landmines left behind by family pets.  It seems fitting because with April comes the thaw of the poopy mood I've been in for the last few months due to my Seasonal Affective Disorder.  Something about the warm air, the sunshine, and general newness of Spring seems to thaw the emotional chill that can sometimes feel soul penetrating.

It can be a slow wake up, but gradually I will start to feel human again.  I will drink my coffee on the balcony in the cool air and warm sun.  I will plant seeds.  I will open my windows to the fresh air while I clean house and blast the neighborhood with my music and singing while I scrub away the Winter grit.

Sometimes, if I'm lucky, there will be a nice, hard, warm rain.  The kind of rain that pounds the Earth, washing away the remaining snow and sand from winter. It's my favorite rain of the year. The one that hits hard, and cleanses for the newness of the season.  Sometimes, when winter has been rough you can find me out dancing in the rain and laughing like a crazy person.

It's my least favorite month because it becomes apparent to me how rough the winter was, but somehow the sunshine seems to dissipate those feelings, and I know the showers will soon bring flowers.

  3. I feel the same way about April, I love that it signifies coming out of the long dark cave that is winter. I hope you keep dancing in the rain and celebrating spring.

  5. February is my least favorite month for many of the reasons you listed here. Here, April is the month that things finally start to warm up reliably. Either way I am very glad to be done with winter!

  6. I couldn't imagine April being anything other than warm and sunny, but it's autumn where I live right now, so the thought of cold right now is just too awful to bear. I'm glad your SAD is at an end for another year, I know it can be really miserable to live with.

  8. Great post! Living in Florida for the past 23 years I don't really experience winter, but I know exactly where you're coming from having grown in England and Scotland where the winters can be quite harsh and very dreary!

  9. I normally love winter, but this past winter was crazy as we got hit with storm after storm...I've had enough. I love the sun that peaks through, I love the possibility of gardens, sunlight, staying out all day, eating outside. I am so done and need the warmth now!
